Leave Mapping in Nigeria

A practical overview of statutory leave entitlements in Nigeria

How should an employer manage leave for employees in Nigeria?

Nigeria’s statutory framework is more limited compared to some jurisdictions, with core provisions focused on annual, sick, and maternity leave. Employers often need to supplement these with internal policies.

Annual Leave

Statutory annual leave is set at:

  • 6 days per year for standard employees

However, some employment arrangements provide enhanced entitlements, such as:

  • 21 days annual leave (employer-specific policy)

Key considerations:

  • Leave is typically earned over a 12-month cycle
  • It may be deferred for up to 24 months
  • Payment in lieu of leave is generally not permitted unless employment terminates

Sick Leave

Employees are entitled to:

  • 12 days of paid sick leave annually

This is a statutory entitlement and must be administered consistently.

Payment in lieu of leave is generally not permitted unless employment terminates.

Maternity Leave

Female employees are entitled to:

  • 12 weeks of maternity leave

This is typically structured as:

  • 6 weeks before birth
  • 6 weeks after birth

Compensation is:

  • 50% of wages, provided the employee has at least 6 months of service

Paternity and Compassionate Leave

There is:

  • No statutory provision for paternity leave
  • No statutory compassionate leave

These types of leave are usually governed by employer policies.
