Understanding Leave Entitlements in Morocco

A Guide to Annual, Sick, Maternity and Family Leave

Morocco’s leave framework provides employees with statutory entitlements covering annual vacation, sick leave, maternity and paternity leave, as well as various forms of paid leave for important family events. Understanding these provisions is essential for employers managing payroll and employee benefits in Morocco.

Annual Vacation

Employees are entitled to up to 18 days of paid annual leave per year.

Annual leave entitlement increases with seniority. Employees receive an additional 1.5 working days for every five years of completed service, subject to a maximum total annual leave entitlement of 30 working days.

Accurately tracking employee service periods is therefore important when calculating annual leave entitlements.

Sick Leave Explained

Employees are entitled to a minimum of four days of paid sick leave per year.

Where an absence due to illness or injury lasts for more than four days, the employee is required to provide a medical certificate.

Employers may assume that an employee has resigned if the employee remains absent for more than 180 consecutive days.

Maternity Leave

Pregnant employees are entitled to 14 weeks of paid maternity leave.

A mandatory period of seven consecutive weeks must be taken following delivery.

Employers should ensure that maternity leave is accurately recorded and reflected in payroll throughout the employee’s absence.

Annual leave entitlement increases with seniority. Employees receive an additional 1.5 working days for every five years of completed service, subject to a maximum total annual leave entitlement of 30 working days.

Paternity Leave

Employees are entitled to three paid days of paternity leave following the birth of a child. The three days do not have to be taken consecutively. However, they must be taken within the month following labour.

Other Paid Time Off

In addition to statutory annual, sick, maternity and paternity leave, employees may be entitled to paid leave for certain personal and family events.

The terms of the employment contract may provide for additional leave.

Employees are entitled to:

  • Up to four days of leave when they get married.
  • Up to three days of bereavement leave following the death of an immediate family member.
  • Two days of leave for surgery on their spouse or dependent child.
  • Two days of leave for circumcision.

Employers should ensure that these different leave categories are clearly distinguished within their payroll and leave management processes.

National Holidays

Morocco has a total of 13 public holidays.
