In Eswatini, the tax treatment of travel allowances and company cars depends on whether an employee receives a vehicle allowance or a company vehicle, and whether the vehicle is available for private use.

‍

Travel Allowances

‍

Fixed car allowance with private use: Where a fixed car allowance is provided, and the vehicle is available for private use by the employee or their family or household, the full allowance is included in taxable income.

‍

Fixed car allowance for business travel: Where an employee receives an allowance to purchase and maintain a personal vehicle required for business travel, the taxable amount is calculated as follows:

A = B − (C × D ÷ E)

‍

Where:

  • A: Amount included in taxable income.
  • B: Car allowance received.
  • C: Actual or deemed fixed and running costs, net of recoupments.
  • D: Actual business mileage or deemed mileage of 6,000 km.
  • E: Actual total mileage or deemed mileage of 24,000 km.

‍

Where accurate records are not maintained, the following deemed costs apply:

  • Fixed costs: 25% of the vehicle’s original cost per year of assessment.
  • Running costs per kilometre:
    • 1,600 cc or less: E0.54
    • More than 1,600 cc up to 2,000 cc: E0.76
    • More than 2,000 cc: E0.85
The tax treatment of travel allowances and company cars depends on whether an employee receives a vehicle allowance or a company vehicle, and whether the vehicle is available for private use.

Company cars

‍

Where an employer provides a vehicle for an employee’s private use, the taxable benefit is calculated as follows:

‍

Taxable benefit = 20% × [(A × B ÷ C) − D]

‍

Where:

  • A: Vehicle cost to the employer when first provided for private use.
  • B: Number of days the vehicle is used or available for private use.
  • C: Total days in the year of assessment.
  • D: Any payment made by the employee for the benefit.

‍

Where an employee receives more than one company car, the taxable benefit must be calculated separately for each vehicle.

‍

Key payroll considerations

‍

Employers should correctly classify vehicle allowances and benefits, apply the relevant tax formulas, and retain supporting records for mileage, vehicle costs, private-use availability and employee contributions.
