Leave entitlements in Angola are governed by structured provisions covering maternity, paternity, sick leave, and annual leave, alongside specific rules for training and termination.

Annual Leave

  • 22 working days per calendar year

Sick Leave

  • 100% salary paid for the first 6 months
  • Employment may terminate after 12 months of absence
  • Fixed-term contracts expire as agreed, regardless of illness
Employers receive full salary pay for the first six months of sick leave.

Maternity Leave

  • Entitlement: 3 months, extended by 4 weeks for multiple births
  • Timing: Up to 4 weeks before expected delivery, with the balance after childbirth
  • Special cases:
    • Late childbirth extends pre-birth leave to ensure 9 weeks post-birth
    • Miscarriage, stillbirth, or death: 6 weeks post-event leave
    • If the child dies: leave ends after 6 weeks, with return to work after 8 business days

Employers pay wages during leave and may request reimbursement from the National Institute of Social Security.

  • Additional: 4 weeks unpaid maternity leave after the standard period

Paternity Leave

  • 1 day paid leave at birth
  • Additional 7 days unpaid leave (consecutive or intermittent)

Accumulation of Leave

Annual leave may be accumulated for 2–3 years, provided at least 10 working days are taken in the year earned.

Employees are entitled to payment for unused leave upon termination of employment.
