Work Permits & Visas
  • Foreign nationals may obtain short-term work permits (valid 3 months, renewable once to a max of 6 months) or long-term employment permits (valid up to 2 years).
  • Work permits required for all foreign employees working for Zambian entities.
  • Payroll
  • Payroll Cycle: Wages typically paid on the final working day of the month.
  • Income Components: Salary, bonuses, overtime, allowances, taxable benefits, and certain lump-sum perks.
  • Employer Contributions: NAPSA (pension), National Health Insurance, social security.
  • Benefits in Kind: Lodging, transport, health care, food—non-cash benefits provided at employer discretion.
  • Deductions: Only expenses wholly and exclusively incurred for income generation; generally limited in practice.
  • Payroll Taxes: PAYE deducted and remitted by employers; 0.5% Skills Development Levy also payable.
  • Minimum Wage: ZMW 2,313.10 per month
  • Employment Contracts
  • Probation: Up to 3 months, extendable once to a maximum of 6 months.
  • Working Hours: 48 hours/week; overtime paid at 1.5x regular hourly rate.
  • Notice Periods:
    • <30 days contract: 24 hours
    • 1–3 months contract: 14 days
    • 3 months contract: 30 days
  • Termination:
    • By written notice (1 month for <5 yrs service; 2 months for ≥5 yrs).
    • Without cause for serious misconduct.
    • By mutual consent or redundancy.
  • Severance:
    • Fixed-term: 25% of basic pay earned.
    • Redundancy: 2 months’ basic pay per completed year.
    • Death: 2 months per year.
    • Medical discharge: 3 months per year.
  • Non-Compete: Enforceable if reasonable.
  • Employee Benefits
  • Social Security:
    • NAPSA pension – combined 10% (capped at ZMW 3,416.40/month).
    • National Health Insurance – 1% employer + 1% employee.
    • Workers’ Compensation – employer-funded, based on risk level.
  • Health: Covered under National Health Insurance.
  • Retirement: Provided through NAPSA.
  • Annual Leave: 24 days.
  • Sick Leave: Up to 6 months (3 months at 100%, then 3 months at 50%).
  • Maternity Leave: 14 weeks (extended for multiple births; reduced after miscarriage).
  • Paternity Leave: 5 consecutive working days.
  • Family Leave: 7 days paid per year.
  • Public Holidays: 14 days.
  • Tax Overview
  • Tax Residency: Present ≥183 days in a charge year, or not temporarily in Zambia.
  • Tax Year: January 1 – December 31.
  • System: Source-based; residents also taxed on foreign dividends/interest.
  • Taxable Income: Employment income and benefits; several exemptions apply (pensions, medical grounds lump sums, scholarships, etc.).
  • Rates: Progressive 0%–37%.
  • DTAs: Zambia maintains multiple double taxation agreements.
