Turkey
Work Permits & Visas

Foreign nationals require both a work visa and work permit.

  • Apply for a work visa at a Turkish consulate with a job offer; employer applies for the work permit with the Ministry of Labour.
  • Work visas are valid for up to 90 days in a 180-day period; longer stays require a resident permit.
  • Initial work permits are valid for 1 year, extendable to 2, then 3 years; 8 years of continuous work allows for an indefinite permit.
Payroll
  • Income includes salaries, wages, allowances; deductions for charity, education, health, insurance (capped at annual gross minimum salary).
  • Employer contributions: Social security and unemployment insurance.
  • Payroll cycle: Monthly, paid last day of month.
  • Employer withholds income tax and stamp tax; must file social security and unemployment premiums monthly.

Employment Contracts
  • Probation: Max 2 months.
  • Notice: 2 weeks (<6 months service), 4 weeks (6–18 months), 6 weeks (18–36 months), 8 weeks (>3 years).
  • Minimum Wage (2024): Net TRY 22,104.67; gross TRY 26,005.50.
  • Working Hours: Max 45/week.
  • Overtime: 150% rate, or time off in lieu (1.5 hrs per overtime hr); double pay for public holiday work; max 270 hrs/year.
  • Severance: 30 days’ gross pay/year (capped, revised semi-annually).
  • Non-compete: Only valid for certain confidential roles; must be reasonable in scope.
Employee Benefits
  • Social Security Contributions: Employee – 9% pension, 5% health, 1% unemployment; Employer – 11% pension, 7.5% health, 2% short-term insurance, 2% unemployment.
  • Annual Leave: 20 days after 1 year; +1 day every 4 years.
  • Sick Leave: First 3 days at 100% by employer, thereafter 70%.
  • Maternity Leave: 8 weeks before and after birth; lump-sum maternity benefits.
  • Paternity Leave: 5 days.
  • Other Leave: 10 days/year to care for disabled/ill child; 3 days bereavement
  • Public Holidays: 14 days/year.
Tax Overview
  • Tax Year: Calendar year; paid in two instalments (Mar–May & Nov).
  • System: Progressive 15–40%.
  • Residents taxed on worldwide income; non-residents on Turkish income only.
  • Deductions and exemptions apply.
  • DTAs: In place with many countries.
