Oman
Work Permits & Visas
  • Visa types include: Work Visa, Temporary Work Visa, Employment Contracting Visa, Family Joining Visa, and Student Visa.
  • Work visas are employer-sponsored and generally valid for two years.
  • Employees must be aged 21–60 and match the role listed on the labour permit.
  • Some nationalities require additional authorisation and medical certificates.
  • Residence cards must be obtained within 30 days of arrival and are valid for two years.
Payroll
  • Payroll is processed monthly in Oman.
  • Income includes salary, bonuses, overtime, allowances, and taxable benefits.
  • Deductions may include social security, retirement, healthcare (for expatriates), loans, and salary advances.
  • Employer contributions apply to social security, unemployment insurance, and workers’ compensation.
Employment Contracts
  • Contracts must be in writing; non-Arabic contracts require an Arabic translation.
  • Probation: Up to 3 months for monthly-paid employees; 1 month for others.
  • Working hours: 45 hours per week; 30 hours during Ramadan.
  • Overtime:
    • 125% for daytime hours
    • 150% for night work
  • Notice period:
    • 30 days for monthly-paid employees
    • 15 days for others
  • Severance:
    • 15 days’ basic pay per year for first 3 years
    • 30 days’ basic pay per year thereafter
  • Non-compete clauses limited to 2 years and specific geographic areas.
Employee Benefits
  • Social Security:
    • Employee: 7%
    • Employer: 10.5%
  • Unemployment insurance: 1% employee + 1% employer.
  • Workers’ compensation: 1% employer contribution.
  • Annual leave: 30 days per year after 6 months of service.
  • Sick leave: Up to 10 weeks annually; first 2 weeks fully paid.
  • Maternity leave: 98 days fully paid.
  • Paternity leave: 7 days fully paid.
  • Public holidays: 13–15 paid days annually.
  • Additional leave includes marriage, Hajj, compassionate, and study leave.
Tax Overview
  • Tax year: 1 January – 31 December.
  • Personal Income Tax:
    • No PIT currently in force.
    • Personal Income Tax scheduled to take effect from 1 January 2028.
  • Tax residency:
    • Omani citizens
    • Non-residents present in Oman for more than 183 days.
  • Double Taxation Agreements: Oman has DTAs with multiple countries.
