Monaco at a Glance

Whether you're hiring your first employee or expanding an existing team, understanding the local employment landscape is essential. From visa requirements and statutory benefits to payroll taxes and regulatory oversight, this section provides a practical overview of what employers need to know to stay compliant and operate effectively in

Monaco
Work Permits & Visas

Foreign nationals who are not entitled to work freely in Monaco generally require appropriate residence and work authorisation before commencing employment. The process typically involves an employer submitting the required employment documentation to the relevant Monaco authorities. Requirements may vary depending on the employee's nationality, residence status and the nature and duration of the employment.

Payroll

Employers in Monaco must register employees with the relevant social security authorities and make the required payroll deductions and employer contributions. Payroll is commonly processed monthly, with salaries generally paid in euros.

Mandatory contributions support areas including retirement, health and family benefits, unemployment insurance and other social protection schemes. Contribution rates and ceilings vary depending on the type of contribution and applicable salary thresholds. Employers are responsible for calculating, withholding and remitting the required contributions.

Employment Contracts
  • Contract Types: Employment may be based on open-ended or fixed-term contracts. Fixed-term contracts must generally be used only where legally justified.
