Work Permits & Visas
  • Most visitors require a visa (single-entry: 2 months; double-entry: 3 months; multiple-entry: 6 months). Tourist visas do not allow employment.
  • To work legally, foreigners need both a work visa (for entry) and a work permit (for employment).
  • Employers must be registered with the Ministry of Labor to sponsor foreign staff.
  • Two main work permits:
    • General Work Permit
    • Aqaba Special Economic Zone (ASEZ) Work Permit — includes tax benefits and simplified processing.
  • Payroll
    • Payroll Cycle: Typically monthly, paid on the last day of the month.
    • Income: Salary, wages, bonuses, overtime, taxable allowances (housing, lodging, etc.), lump sum perks.
    • Deductions: Income tax and social security contributions.
    • Employer Contributions: Social Security 14.25% of monthly salary.
    • Employee Contributions: Social Security 7.5%.
    • Payroll Taxes: Income tax, social security, provident fund contributions.
    • Benefits in Kind: Fully taxable.
    • Minimum Wage: JOD 290/month.
    Employment Contracts
    • Probation: Optional, max 3 months.
    • Working Hours: 48 hours/week (8 hours/day, Sunday–Thursday). Overtime capped at 30 days/year, paid as a % of hourly wage.
    • Notice Period: 1 month for indefinite contracts.
    • Termination: By agreement, expiry, completion of task, incapacity, or death.
    • Severance: 1 month’s salary per year of service (min 3 months, max 6 months).
    • Non-Compete: Allowed if reasonable in scope/duration; not always enforceable

    Employee Benefits
    • Social Security: Covers pensions, maternity, sickness, work injury. Employer (14.25%) + employee (7.5%).
    • Healthcare: Public system funded by contributions; employees entitled to free/reduced care.Annual Leave: 14 days/year, rising to 21 days after 5 years.Sick Leave: 14 paid days/year; extendable by 14 days (50% pay) with hospitalization.
    • Maternity Leave: 10 weeks paid (min 6 weeks post-birth), plus 1 paid hour daily for nursing up to 1 year.
    • Paternity Leave: 3 days paid.
    • Other Leave: 14 days for study, pilgrimage (after 5 years), or Ministry-approved training.
    • Public Holidays: 16 paid per year.
    Tax Overview
    • Tax Year: Jan 1 – Dec 31.
    • System: Progressive 5%–30%.
    • Residents: Taxed on worldwide income.
    • Non-Residents: Taxed on Jordan-sourced income.
    • Taxable Income: Employment earnings, allowances, bonuses, business and investment income.
    • DTAs: Multiple treaties in force.
