Work Permits & Visas

Foreign nationals must obtain a work permit before employment in Fiji. Employers are responsible for sponsorship and must demonstrate that local candidates are unavailable.

Payroll
  • Employers must register with the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS).
  • Payroll is typically processed monthly or fortnightly. Employers must:
    • Withhold PAYE income tax
    • Deduct employee contributions
    • Submit payroll returns
  • Social Contributions:
    Fiji operates a provident fund system (FNPF):
    • Employer: 10%
    • Employee: 8%
Employment Contracts
  • Contracts may be fixed-term or indefinite. Written contracts are standard.
  • Probation Period: Typically 3 months.
  • Working Hours: Standard workweek: 48 hours
  • Termination: Termination requires notice or payment in lieu.
  • Severance: Applicable in redundancy situations, calculated based on service.

  • Annual Leave: Minimum 10 days paid leave per year.
  • Sick Leave: Typically 10 days paid sick leave annually.
  • Maternity Leave: 98 days leave, partially paid depending on eligibility.
  • Public Holidays: Around 10–12 national holidays.

  • Tax Residency: Individuals present in Fiji for more than 183 days are considered tax residents.
  • Tax Year: January 1 – December 31.
  • Fiji applies a progressive tax system with rates up to 39%.
