Cameroon at a Glance

Whether you're hiring your first employee or expanding an existing team, understanding the local employment landscape is essential. From visa requirements and statutory benefits to payroll taxes and regulatory oversight, this section provides a practical overview of what employers need to know to stay compliant and operate effectively in

Cameroon
Work Permits & Visas

Foreign nationals must hold a work permit and visa issued by the Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training to be employed in Cameroon.

  • Temporary Work Permits: Valid for up to one year, suitable for short-term assignments.
  • Long-Term Permits: Renewable annually, often required for extended placements.
  • Employers must sponsor all foreign hires, demonstrating no qualified local candidate is available.
  • The application process can take 2–3 months and requires documentation such as contract, medical and criminal clearance, all usually in English or French.
Payroll
  • Employers are required to register with the Botswana Unified Revenue Service (BURS) for PAYE within 14 days of hiring.
  • While social contributions are mandatory—covering pensions, housing, work injury, and employment funds—they total approximately 15.45% of gross salary for employer costs and around 5.2% for employee contributions.
  • Payroll is processed monthly, with salary payments often on the last working day.
  • Annual reconciliation and monthly tax filings are mandatory.
Employment Contracts
  • Permissible contracts include fixed‑term and open‑ended.
  • Probation: Typically up to 6 months.
  • Working Hours: Standard 40-hour week, with overtime capped at 20 hours/week, paid at escalating premium rates depending on timing and circumstances.
  • Termination: Requires written notice or pay in lieu, with severance depending on length of service.
  • Collective bargaining agreements are recognized in unionized industries.
Employee Benefits
  • Mandatory mandatory contributions support pensions, healthcare, housing, employment insurance, and accident coverage.
  • Annual Leave: Full-time employees receive 18 days of paid leave per year.
  • Sick Leave: Paid, subject to medical certification and tenure.
  • Maternity Leave: 14 weeks, often with partial or full pay depending on employer.
  • Paternity Leave: Typically 3 days paid.
  • Many employers voluntarily provide additional benefits such as transport, wellness programs, and training opportunities.
