Work Permits & Visas
  • Foreign nationals require a work visa and work permit to work in Cameroon.
  • Employers must sponsor the application.
  • Required documentation typically includes:
    • Employment contract
    • Job description
    • Medical certificate
    • CV and passport copies
  • Permits are role- and employer-specific.
  • Short-term, temporary, and long-term visas are available.
Payroll
  • Payroll may be processed weekly, bi-weekly, fortnightly, or monthly.
  • Minimum monthly wage: XAF 43,969.
  • Employers must withhold:
    • Personal income tax (progressive)
    • 2.5% payroll tax
  • Employer contributions include:
    • Social security
    • Housing fund
    • National employment fund
    • Workers’ compensation insurance
Employment Contracts
  • Contracts may be fixed-term or indefinite.Written contracts are standard practice.
  • Probation periods:
    • Up to 6 months for employees
    • Up to 8 months for supervisory roles
    Working hours: 40 hours per week.
  • Overtime pay: 20%–50% premium, depending on timing.
  • Notice periods:
    • Less than 1 year: 15 days
    • 1–5 years: 1 month
    • Over 5 years: 2 months
  • Non-compete clauses are permitted if clearly defined.
Employee Benefits
  • Annual leave: Minimum 18 working days per year (increases with seniority).
  • Sick leave: Typically 5–30 paid days per year.
  • Maternity leave: 14 weeks paid via social security, extendable for medical reasons.
  • Public holidays: 10 paid national holidays.
  • Statutory contributions:
    • Employee social security: 4.2% (capped)
    • Housing fund: 1% employee / 1.5% employer
    • National employment fund: 1% employer
    • Workers’ compensation: 1.75%–5% employer, risk-based

  • Tax residency: Individuals present in Cameroon for 183 days or more per year.
  • Residents are taxed on Cameroon-sourced income.
  • Tax year: January 1 – December 31.
